Vision/Mission Statement

The purpose of the Anglesea and District Historical Society since its establishment in 1980 has been to collect, catalogue and preserve the history of the Anglesea and Aireys Inlet area for our society members, local residents, and members of an interested wider audience.  We do this through our museum, which houses an extensive collection of historical memorabilia and artefacts, our publications, our community activities (general meetings, in-service programs, trips and excursions), and our online presence. We have the only Family History Group in the Surf Coast Shire.

Our main display space is four rooms within History House, Anglesea. The building was originally a private home built in the postmodern functionalist style in 1952. Later it was bequeathed to the then Barrabool Shire who designated it as an historical repository. The last remaining Anglesea bathing box is located in the garden of History House. The interior displays maritime-themed items. Several large collection items, such as an early petrol bowser, are also located in the adjacent garden.

At Aireys Inlet, there are displays in a bark hut. The original hut, built by early settlers, was burnt down in the 1983 bushfires. The current structure is a faithful recreation. Agricultural implements are located both inside and outside the building.
